Dr Kathleen Poon trained as a GP registrar at Sandstone Inala. Her early career took her into regional Queensland, starting in Rockhampton, where she was “a fresh city doctor” learning country medicine, followed by a year in Cairns where she started her young family. Those regional years clarified for Kathleen how she wanted to practise.
When she returned to Brisbane and was invited back to Sandstone as a GP at Yeerongpilly, she already knew it would be a chance to work in the best way for her — with time to listen, act on what she hears, and support patients well over a long relationship. She also values time with other doctors to support and learn from each other especially when managing patients with chronic conditions.
Kathleen is interested in the breadth of general practice, from babies through to older adults, with particular focus on paediatrics, women’s health, and chronic disease management. She completed the Sydney Child Health Program before becoming a mother herself. She has also worked in the Inala Complex Diabetes Service so is confident with diabetes and cardiovascular health whilst appreciating the stress these conditions can create.
Kathleen says: ‘It might sound like a bit of a cliché, but what drew me to medicine in the first place was being able to help people when they’re most vulnerable, and having the skillset to actually do that.’
