Cathy Prest is a pharmacist but not from behind a chemist counter. She’s Sandstone’s non-dispensing pharmacist working alongside doctors when they’re prescribing. She reviews what patients are already taking, checks for interactions, finds better options. She’s an essential part of the team at a crucial decision point: what will suit this patient best?
For 25 years, Cathy’s visited people at home, especially when they can’t get to the surgery. She reviews what they’re taking—and what they’re not. Medications forgotten, not believed in, or simply outdated, languishing in the cupboard.
Sometimes she needs to be a bit of a sleuth to work out what’s getting in the way. Sometimes the solution is simple like the woman who was told to take just half a tablet but with her Parkinson’s disease, unable to break the tiny tablet in two. Cathy’s solution: different brand—same strength, double the size, easy to break in half.
Cathy says: ‘People often say, “Why would I need someone to come and do that for me?” but there’s always something you can influence or make better. That’s why I enjoy it so much. It’s a passion of mine to make things safer and find better choices.’
